Our goal, like that of all reading instruction, is to develop life long learners who love to read.  Reading is crucial to everything we do as active members of society.  It helps us earn a living, participate n politics, understand science, care for our families, and stay healthy.  Reading also fosters our personal growth.

Henry David Thoreau said, "Reading can inspire, reading can provide good companionship, reading can fortify human freedoms, and reading can bring people together.  This is the power of reading".

We, too, at FVMS, believe that each student can learn to read and with practice they can build on the skill of reading.  We believe that reading will empower the students to become successful

The Accelerated Reading Program along with the STAR testing is based on the fundamental principle that practice improves reading.  It combines the power of computer technology -Accelerated Reader - with a set of sound teaching strategies in a new and effective way.  We call this combination Reading Renaissance.

Reading Renaissance is so successful because it enables teachers to give their students large amounts of reading practice, and helps them monitor and guide that practice.  We believe the result is a continuous growth of students reading skills and ultimately the development of a life long reader.

$100.00  - End of the Year Top Reader

$50.00 - Second Place Top Reader

Students that had 100 AR points could attend the Accelerated Reader Luau.  The top readers had a great time at the AR Luau.  The luau was held at Lake Tobesofskee in Macon, Georgia.

The students played games, ate delicious grilled foods and had lots of fun at the lake.

Top readers were treated to lunch and a movie.  After the lunch and movie, students traveled to Olympia Skate Center and had a little roller skating fun!

The Media Center sets up a mini store where students can cash in their AR reading points for goodies such as CD players, balls, pencils, stuffed animals, candy and soft drinks. The store is open for students each nine weeks.
